Wisdom Teeth Removal in Whangārei

Wisdom teeth – also called third molars – are the last teeth to come through, usually in your late teens or early twenties. For some people, they settle in without trouble. For many others, they don’t.

When there isn’t enough space in the jaw, wisdom teeth can become impacted, partially erupt, or grow at an angle. That’s when pain, swelling, infection and damage to neighbouring teeth can start.

At Dental North, we assess, monitor and remove wisdom teeth with care, clarity and a focus on your long-term oral health.

When do wisdom teeth need to be removed?

Not all wisdom teeth have to come out. We recommend removal when they are:

  • Causing pain or swelling
  • Repeatedly infected (pericoronitis)
  • Trapping food and bacteria
  • Damaging the tooth in front
  • Difficult or impossible to clean properly
  • Contributing to crowding or gum problems
  • Developing cysts or other complications

If they’re not currently causing issues, we may simply monitor them with periodic examinations and x-rays.

Are wisdom tooth extractions painful?

The idea is often worse than the reality.

During the procedure, you’ll be fully numb. Afterwards, discomfort is usually manageable with recommended pain relief and careful aftercare.

The key is early assessment – waiting until there is significant infection or swelling often makes recovery more uncomfortable.

What to expect

  1. Assessment and imaging
We begin with a thorough examination and dental x-rays to see the position of the wisdom teeth and how close they are to nerves and surrounding structures. You’ll get a clear explanation of what’s happening and your options.
  2. The procedure
Many wisdom teeth can be removed here at Dental North under local anaesthetic. We work gently and methodically to keep you comfortable throughout.

If your case is more complex – for example, deeply impacted teeth or proximity to major nerves – we may refer you to a trusted oral surgeon.
  3. Aftercare and recovery
Some swelling and discomfort is normal for a few days. We provide clear post-operative instructions and advice on pain management, eating and healing.

When should you get them checked?

If you’re in your late teens or early twenties and haven’t had your wisdom teeth assessed, it’s worth doing. Early evaluation allows us to:

  • Identify potential problems before they escalate
  • Plan removal at the right time (if needed)
  • Avoid emergency pain and infection

If you’re already experiencing pain or swelling, don’t wait. Early treatment reduces complications and speeds recovery.
